About Us

The Transportation Engineering & Science program (TESP) is a research concentration within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. TESP has a long history of leading state and national transportation projects, initiatives, and centers, including the Center for Transportation Research and the Southeastern Transportation Center. Faculty and students within the program are involved in international collaborations and contribute to published scholarship.

The mission of TESP is to contribute to the advancement of transportation in three ways:

Education

  • Further the education of future and current transportation professionals.
  • Introduce undergraduate and graduate students to transportation and associated problems and approaches.
  • Enhance our internationally recognized graduate program that trains students from diverse backgrounds as professionals who plan, design, and operate multimodal transportation systems in both domestic and international settings.

Research

  • Contribute to the development of knowledge that expands our current body of transportation engineering knowledge and stimulates applications of new strategies and technologies involving planning, design, and operations of the transportation system.
  • Contribute to further development of the transportation engineering profession through applied research.

Public Service

  • Commitment to knowledge transfer and public service provides immediate benefits to the university, Tennessee residents, the nation, and a number of countries.
  • Disseminate knowledge to transportation practitioners and other stakeholders, student internships in government agencies, and student and faculty involvement in the Transportation Research Board, Institute of Transportation Engineers, and American Society of Civil Engineers activities, and editorships of journals.
